About & FAQ

Where does your online handle originate from?
It’s a nickname. People typically call me Angle or Angie, feel free to use either one.
What are your pronouns?
I do prefer they/them, but she/her is also fine.
Where are you from & what is your education?
I live in Studio City, Los Angeles CA and I went to a local college for general studies. I am mostly self taught other than that.
What medium & tools do you work with?
Predominantly, I am a digital artist, using an iPad Pro and Procreate as my main program. My default canvas is set to 3300 x 5100px at 300 DPI. The brushes I use in my works can be found here
How did you develop your style?
Style is a never ending journey. It’s a culmination of inspiration, emotions, cutting corners, etc. All of that changes for me, sometimes on a daily basis. I experiment a LOT, studying techniques and executing them how I like. Progression naturally comes from working on things I’m personally passionate about.
What is your step by step art process like?
It’s never linear. I’m not really a sketcher, never have been. Since I was young, I liked free doodling with pens and ink. That’s translated to the work I enjoy doing still to this day.
So I’ll commonly start with:
1. An idea or inspiration. Collect references or atmospheric images to assist with the preliminary stage. I’ll very roughly create a sketch, but this is more of a guideline than a first rendition- the bones or framework of the piece.
2. Lineart, which is on the heavy side, is next. A lot of the time I am already determining lighting at this stage, using black for the harshest shadows.
3. If proceeding to a full render, color fills separating each portion (skin, hair, clothes, etc.) are layered as masks. This is so overlays and textures can be applied individually.
4. Shade, color, render. Color-wise, I do wing it a lot of the time. I rely on curves and color balance at the end.
5. I make it a point to wait on releasing freshly finished pieces until a day or two later, so that way a pair of fresh eyes can audit anything I might have missed.
Which part of your work do you enjoy the most?
It’s easy for me to get lost in little details. Inking/lineart is my favorite phase. At that point, the contrast of blacks and whites are very pleasing to look at in my opinion.
Which part of your work do you find challenging or dislike?
What probably frustrates me the most is the lack of time I have to devote to creating. In addition to that, the coloring process. Color theory is something I have struggled with since the beginning and I’ve only recently started to make progress on that front.
Do you have any tips or tricks for [insert art subject here]?
We all want a shortcut, don’t we? But if you want to approach getting better at anything, understanding how you personally process information and how you learn from it will make things easier, or at least make it less frustrating. Figure out where you lie on the VARK model
Then familiarize yourself with the tools available to you. Procreate has a series of videos that anyone using the app should take a look at.Grasp an understanding of the basics. Anatomy, perspective, composition, lighting & shading. Devote time to studies of each subject. Drawing from life is what people have been doing for forever, but CTRLPaint is a great resource. Some other neat websites for poses and exercises are line-of-action, trueref, and posemaniacs. For coloring, I do recommend a view of Marco Bucci’s seriesSeeking feedback and criticism helps as well, not only with technical learning but motivation too. Go join online peer review groups! How do you overcome creative blocks?
I think creative blocks are sometimes misunderstood as an absence of creativity- gone, lacking, missing. Which exacerbates the moment being created by whatever feeling started it. Be it exhaustion, judgement, inadequacy, failure, or something else entirely.
I went through a very long period of not creating anything, and to move through it I viewed this “block”, the wall holding back the creativity, as not something impassable but as myself needing to take a shift in direction and perspective. I didn’t beat my head against it as I had done in the past, forcing yourself is probably the worst thing you can do. Now I find new paths, experiment. My advice may simply boil down to “try new things” whether it is in the department of art or not. Everyone is different, and no one can tell you exactly how to navigate your own personal rhythm of thought and expression. This certainly helped me, whether that was finding a new hobby or just drawing something I wouldn’t normally. Can I get your art tattooed?
Yes! Absolutely! And if the tattoo artist requires formal permission, feel free to contact me.
Can I study and take inspiration from your art?
I am entirely flattered, and would never tell anyone no. We all learn from one another and mishmash/curate to our own tastes. Just make sure you don’t resort to tracing and don’t limit yourself to one point of learning material. It can become a crutch, halting your journey forward. Branch out, look at realism, surrealism, impressionist, etc. Absorb from as many different sources as possible!
Are you working on any upcoming projects?
Yes, I am currently working on a comic series, “The Devil is a Handsome Man”, a mystery-drama-romance series set in a world inhabited by demons. All updates are available on Patreon
